Thirteen High Wycombe food businesses are rated 0 or 1, out of 31 in Buckinghamshire. But 23 of 24 local September inspections earned the top score of 5.

Thirteen food businesses in High Wycombe are rated 0 or 1 for hygiene. That is 13 of the 31 businesses with those scores anywhere in Buckinghamshire, according to the Food Standards Agency’s ratings register as it stood on 3 October.

The town has about one in seven of the county’s rated food businesses. It has more than four in ten of its worst scores.

There is better news in the latest inspections. Buckinghamshire Council’s officers published 24 new ratings for the Wycombe area in September. Twenty-three were 5, the top score, and the other was a 4.

How the Wycombe area compares

We took every business on the register with a postcode in the seven districts this site covers: HP10 to HP14, SL7 for Marlow and HP27 for Princes Risborough. That gives 1,247 premises. Of those, 1,072 have a rating from 0 to 5. The rest are exempt, or registered and still waiting for a first inspection.

  • 74.1% of rated businesses in the Wycombe area score 5
  • in the rest of Buckinghamshire, the figure is 83.4%
  • in High Wycombe itself (HP11, HP12 and HP13) it is 67.7%, or 378 of 558

Marlow comes out best, with 86.2% of its 174 rated businesses on a 5. The three High Wycombe postcode districts are the bottom three of the seven, between 64.8% and 70.1%.

The 15 Wycombe-area businesses rated 0 or 1

A rating of 0 means “urgent improvement necessary” and 1 means “major improvement necessary”. Inspectors score three things: how food is handled, the condition of the premises, and how well the business manages food safety.

Fifteen businesses in the Wycombe area hold one of those two scores. Thirteen are in High Wycombe. The other two are Mowchak Indian Restaurant on Wycombe Road (HP14) and The Ship on West Street in Marlow.

Only one has a 0: Wycombe Fresh Fish on Castle Street, rated on 10 June 2026. There are three 0 ratings in the whole county.

The ratings are a snapshot of the day of the inspection. Several of these are more than six months old, and the oldest dates from December 2024. A business can ask the council for a re-inspection once it has made the improvements, so a low score here is not necessarily what an inspector would find today.

The register flags one of these businesses, Ohaana on Abbey Barn Road, as having a new rating pending. That means a newer rating has been given but is not yet shown on the register.

A further 16 businesses in the area are rated 2, “improvement necessary”. Thirteen of them are in High Wycombe.

September’s inspections: 23 fives and a four

These are the Wycombe-area ratings dated September 2026 on the register. The newest is 22 September. Ratings reach the register some days after the inspection, so late-September visits will appear next month.

The list leans towards schools, because September is when school kitchens are visited. Six schools or school caterers scored 5, including Princes Risborough School, Carrington Infant School in Flackwell Heath and Red Kite School on Aylesbury Road.

The only score below 5 was a 4 for Coco Tamarind at Askett, about a mile north-east of Princes Risborough. A 4 means “good”.

What it means for you

  • Check before you order. Every business has its own page on the FSA register, with the date of its last inspection and the three part-scores behind it. Businesses in England do not have to display their sticker, so the register is the reliable place to look.
  • A low score is dated. Check the rating date. A business rated a year ago may have been re-inspected since, and a new rating can take a few weeks to appear.
  • Businesses have a right of reply. Under the food hygiene rating scheme a business can appeal its rating, ask for a re-inspection after making improvements, and publish a written reply on its register page.
  • Report a problem. Food safety concerns about a Wycombe business go to Buckinghamshire Council, which carries out the inspections.

How we counted

We read the Food Standards Agency’s register for Buckinghamshire Council on 3 October 2026. It lists 4,599 premises across the county. We kept the 1,247 with a postcode in HP10, HP11, HP12, HP13, HP14, SL7 or HP27. Shares are of businesses with a score from 0 to 5, so exempt premises and those awaiting a first inspection are left out. “Rest of Buckinghamshire” is every other rated business on the council’s register: 2,972 of them.

Some postcode districts cross the county line, but Buckinghamshire’s register only lists businesses the council inspects, so none from Oxfordshire or Berkshire are counted.
