High Wycombe trains to London: 27 mins, £4,696 a year

High Wycombe is 27 minutes from London Marylebone on the fastest Chiltern Railways service, with about two trains an hour and no changes. The station is 26 miles from the terminus, which makes this one of the quickest commutes into London from anywhere in Buckinghamshire.

That is the headline, and it only covers one of the three towns this paper serves. Princes Risborough is on the same Chiltern line further out. Marlow is not on it at all: it sits at the end of a branch to Maidenhead and its trains run to Paddington with a change. The three routes cost within £200 a year of each other and behave completely differently, so this page sets them out side by side.

The three routes, compared

Season ticket prices are the standard “London Terminals” fares quoted by Trainline on 10 August 2026. The Princes Risborough ticket is only valid for travel through High Wycombe, which matters if you were thinking of going round via Aylesbury.

High Wycombe to Marylebone

Chiltern runs roughly two trains an hour all day, every one of them direct. The fastest takes 27 minutes; the slower stopping services take longer because they call at Beaconsfield, Seer Green and Gerrards Cross on the way.

The Travelcard version costs £1,092 a year more and buys unlimited Tube, bus and London rail travel on top of the journey in. Whether that is worth it comes down to a simple sum: if your walk from Marylebone is more than a couple of stops on the Underground, five days a week, it usually pays.

Chiltern also sells a Monthly Money Saver from £362.20, which is cheaper than the standard monthly season but is a fixed-date product rather than a transferable season ticket, so check the conditions before assuming it replaces one.

Parking and the station itself

The station car park has 620 spaces and 8 accessible bays, free to Blue Badge holders. The top deck is currently out of use, which is worth knowing on a Monday morning.

At £10.80 a day, five days a week, station parking adds around £2,800 a year on top of the season ticket, which is more than half the fare again. The weekly rate at £43.20 is the obvious saving for anyone in five days. The alternative is the park and ride at Handy Cross, where 24 hours costs £4.30 rather than £10.80.

The ticket office is open Monday to Friday 05:45 to 20:40, Saturday 06:40 to 19:40 and Sunday 07:10 to 20:40, with a second office on Platform 3 during the weekday morning peak only. The station is step-free throughout, rated Category A, with lifts between Platforms 2 and 3, though it is about 200 metres from the main entrance to Platform 3.

Marlow to Paddington

Marlow has no direct train to London. Services run down the branch to Maidenhead, where you change for Great Western Railway and Elizabeth line trains to Paddington. The fastest end-to-end journey is 46 minutes; the average is nearer 1 hour 31 minutes, because how long you wait at Maidenhead depends entirely on which branch train you catch. About 35 trains a day make the trip, the first around 05:06 and the last around 00:17.

The odd result is that Marlow’s annual season is £68 cheaper than High Wycombe’s despite taking the best part of twice as long on an average day. Distance sets the fare, not convenience. It is one reason Marlow’s house prices are driven by the Thames rather than by the commute.

Princes Risborough to Marylebone

Princes Risborough is on the same Chiltern main line, four stops out beyond High Wycombe, so trains run direct to Marylebone. The annual season is £4,820, weekly £120.50 and monthly £462.80, and it is valid only via High Wycombe.
